![]() ![]() Of course, this is just one historian's account - others claim the Battle of Zela wasn't so easily won, but "I came, I saw, I conquered" sure does make Caesar sound cool. In the quick and apparently cursorily won Battle of Zela, Caesar defeated Pharnaces and, according to Appian, sent a report back to Rome that he arrived, possibly did a little sightseeing and then totally annihilated the competition easily, quickly and blindfolded. On his way back to Rome from Egypt, Caesar stopped by to rein in Pharnaces, ruler of Cimmerian Bosporus in modern-day Turkey, as he had been making land grabs of his own. This is where the immortal words "Veni, vidi, vici" show up in the history books. Pompey was assassinated by the Egyptians before Caesar could get to him, but while he was there he canoodled with Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt, helping her defeat her brother/husband Ptolemy. The consul, Pompey (coincidentally one of the rich guys who had gotten him elected consul a decade earlier) fled to Egypt and Julius Caesar named himself both consul and dictator of Rome and took off after him. He was eventually called back to Rome and would probably have been thrown in jail for exceeding his authority as governor of Gaul, but instead he decided to invade Rome. After serving a year as consul of Rome, he was made governor of southern Gaul (modern day France), where he spent eight years conquering the rest of Gaul and Britain with his four big armies, or "legions." He got two of his rich friends to bankroll his campaign to run for consul - the highest elected official of Rome, a position so powerful it was only able to be held for one year out of every 10 by one person. Born into the elite Senatorial class, Caesar rose through the ranks of both the military and the Roman senate and served for a year as the governor of Spain. The thing about Julius Caesar is he loved to win.

For photography the picture quality is excellent, and a 96MP multi-shot mode is an option for landscape, architectural, and macro specialists. Its front-facing screen, 5-axis sensor stabilization, and 10-bit 4K are all marks in its favor. If you're looking to make vlogs and want the full-frame look, the S5 is a solid starting platform. Its contrast-detection focus system isn't as good for action shots as alternatives that rely on phase detection, either. On the downside, its L-Mount lens system isn't as fully-formed as rivals Canon or Sony. For the price, it's also hard to beat the full-frame 24MP photos and 10-bit 4K we really love the way the S5 handles, too. The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 is one of the more affordable full-frame cameras available and we especially like its extra-wide 20-60mm kit zoom, which is particularly useful for cityscapes, landscapes, and vlogs. We also see the EOS R7 as a good backup camera for pros with an EOS R5 or R3, as well as SLR holdouts looking to upgrade from an EOS 7D or 90D series body. Family photographers may miss a built-in flash, however, and should look at the EOS R10 or Fujifilm X-T30 II instead. As a main camera, the R7 is versatile enough for landscape and studio work, too, while video is an option for cinema projects. The R7 is a good fit for photo enthusiasts and pros alike, especially those with an eye for action photography and a need for 15fps subject tracking. Weather-protected, magnesium construction makes the R7 a camera you can take out into the world. The 32.5MP APS-C format image sensor matches well with telephoto lenses, offers plenty of resolution for crops, and supports 4K60 video for cinema and vlogs. And the R7 excels at identifying people, pets, wildlife, and race cars. The Canon EOS R7 is a mirrorless camera tailor-made for photographers who want to capture sports, wildlife, and other subjects that call for fast, accurate autofocus. While any connection can host a game, dial-up connections can typically host only a player or two therefore, faster connections make up the majority of servers. Certain thresholds are used to catch malicious players and kick them off the server, as well as message filters, and an entire collection of other anti-cheating features. Servers can change the game mode and have custom maps made to fit the properties of the game. There are two other objectives and corresponding styles (three in total): a style called "capture-the-flag" (or "CTF" for short) in which tanks try to pick up an opponent's flag and bring it to the tank's home base (a small, area marked with the team's color that simply is the home of a team), or a style called " rabbit chase" in which the objective is to have every rogue tank try to destroy a particular white tank, called the "rabbit." If there is no special style indicated by the server owner, the only objective is the above (to simply kill opponent tanks), it is called a "free for all," or "FFA" for short. Styles are server-based, as the server operator chooses what style to host. There are styles of gameplay that modify the objective. Rogue tanks do not have any allegiances to a certain team and are therefore are able to kill anybody. For example, green tanks are supposed to try to destroy red, purple, blue, and rogue tanks. The basic objective is to destroy opponents' tanks, which are tanks of another team's color. In a game of BZFlag, players drive around tanks, viewed from a first-person view, in a server-defined world (also known as a "map"). The old game title for BZFlag from versions 1.10.x and before. Scythe, originally rendered sithe, is an Old English word, indicating that the tool has been in use in these islands for at least a thousand years. ![]() That lack of mastery, and the promise of one day reaching it, is part of the complex beauty of the tool.Įtymology can be interesting. Probably you never master it, just as you never really master anything. I’ve been doing it for years, but I’ve still not mastered it. When the edge of your blade thickens with overuse and oversharpening, you need to draw the edge out by peening it-cold-forging the blade with hammer and small anvil. Peen is a word of Scandinavian origin, originally meaning “to beat iron thin with a hammer,” which is still its meaning, though the iron has now been replaced by steel. And you need to know how to use your peening anvil, and when. You need to take a couple of stones out into the field with you and use them regularly-every five minutes or so-to keep the edge honed. None of them, of course, is any use at all unless it is kept sharp, really sharp: sharp enough that if you were to lightly run your finger along the edge, you would lose blood. Beneath and around them scuttle any number of harder-to-spot competitors for the summer grass, all finding their place in the ecosystem of the tool. These are the big mammals you can see and hear. ![]() I also have a couple of ditch blades (which, despite the name, are not used for mowing ditches in particular, but are all-purpose cutting tools that can manage anything from fine grass to tousled brambles) and a bush blade, which is as thick as a billhook and can take down small trees. My collection includes a number of grass blades of varying styles-a Luxor, a Profisense, an Austrian, and a new, elegant Concari Felice blade that I’ve not even tried yet-whose lengths vary between sixty and eighty-five centimeters. From the genus blade fans out a number of ever-evolving species, each seeking out and colonizing new niches. This thin crescent of steel is the fulcrum of the whole tool. Into this little assemblage slides the tang of the blade. On the bottom of the snath is a small hole, a rubberized protector, and a metal D-ring with two hex sockets. Onto the snath are attached two hand grips, adjusted for the height of the user. I call it the snath, as do most of us in the UK, though variations include the snathe, the snaithe, the snead, and the sned. THE HANDLE, which varies in length according to the height of its user, and in some cases is made by that user to his or her specifications, is like most of the other parts of the tool in that it has a name and thus a character of its own. I can recall at least six different incidents where I died glancing away at the screen for just a second, or missing a school of jellyfish under the waves. You lose all story progress and most of your items, then return to Chapter 1. Soft piano notes fill the air as you glance around, looking at the colorful reefs in the distance, almost pausing to breath in that fresh…BAM. You raise the sails, grab your belongings, and set your sights on the next island on the horizon. Traveling between the islands is so visually pleasing to be almost hypnotic. There is a story difficulty without the harsher penalties, but I got the distinct impression throughout that the rogue-like difficulty was its original design. Windbound’s default difficulty is rogue-like. However, that’s also another potential problem. The game looks absolutely fantastic, and coupled with the calming soundtrack, any feeling of repetition is quickly overcome with the joy of just being in the moment. While the regular crafting materials are common and easy to find, a lot of the most basic items require unique materials only obtainable from specific enemies.Īll of this would be incredibly frustrating and dull if Windbound wasn’t so damn beautiful. Items I needed to craft something as basic as an axe seemed completely unavailable until I reached the next area. Most of the crafting works, and you can gather materials to make tools to gather stronger materials for upgrades. There’s a lot of recipes and crafting options available for instance, you’ll have to gather rocks and sticks to make weapons and a campfire, and you’ll need bamboo and wood to upgrade and enhance your raft. You explore islands, gathering the regular materials. The basic fundamentals of Windbound are familiar and easy to grasp. Separated from her tribe after a deadly storm, she hopes to survive on her wits and determination alone – and you’re going to need an ample supply of both to survive these seas. You begin your adventure as Kara, a young girl who awakens on the beach of an unknown island. ![]() ![]() A beautiful art style and captivating visuals are sure to lure many a brave sailor to these treacherous seas, but what sits on the horizon may well be unexpected. Windbound’s charming and warm exterior hides a complicated mash of genres, as rogue-like elements provide brutal punishment alongside a more traditional open-world RPG design. We’ve all heard the saying “never judge a book by its cover,” and Windbound is the epitome of that philosophy. ![]() A simple picture and a very brief summary is quite often what determines whether or not we fork out hard cash for a game – well, one that hasn’t been marketed across every billboard and bus stop in the country. AAA games, indie darlings, up-and-coming developers – there’s always a huge choice, whatever your platform of choice.Īs such, we are often guilty of judging a game at first glance. Browsing through any of the major digital marketplaces on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Nintendo Switch provides a constant assault of brand new titles. ![]() Please do not forget to leave a review about your microphone.
