Can SSH in no problem, can see boot all the way up to where session manager should start also. Can't switch TTY for more than a moment where I'll see a brief flash of the console and then back to the cursor/blank screen. I went to the physical monitor and there's no desktop, just black screen with a blinking console cursor in the upper left. I went to VNC in, and got a "cannot currently display the desktop" message. Everything turned back on, and I was testing the vpn/pihole when I started having some issues with dhcp to clients. I powered down as I was swapping in a new powerstrip to replace my old one. I thought I was pretty solid, vpn was up, pihole was up, other services all ticking along as expected. It didn't but I did resolve it via the config later. I think I might have screwed myself by giving rpi-update a run in hopes that would clear the issue. Got crowdsec installed, which also planted needsrestart on the system, which then squawked about pending kernel updates everytime apt ran which I didn't initially understand as I was fully upgraded by every metric I could tell. ![]() Desktop up, getting the VPN and pi-hole back into service, and looking at CrowdSec to replace Fail2Ban. The system just didn't want to play nice with my external so I gave that up and went back to the 128gb sdcard. Initially, I tried getting USB boot going, because I thought I'd avoid the corruption issue happening again. I set up a new samsung 128gb card using the rpi-imager for a full desktop. Perfect excuse to get a newer rpi4 8gb & start fresh with bullseye right? The 32gb sd card finally corrupted after 5ish years, and I can't locate where my copied backup is. I've returned stateside, and a year has passed. The only thing I didn't like was that it was under a constant brute-force over SSH from random addresses and fail2ban could only do so much. My entire network was bouncing across the world through that box, and it rarely gave me any trouble. ![]() Extremely frustrated at this point.ĭetails: I had a trusty rpi3b running for several years at my residence serving as a VPN w/ pi-hole while I worked overseas. Tried switching tty's, they'd appear momentarily and disappear. With fresh boot, desktop up and did initial set-up, updates, and reboot. Eventually, could not solve GUI issues and gave up, deciding to start fresh again. SSH fine, NX Nomachine ok, had to establish a desktop to get a GUI. Went to VNC in to troubleshoot VPN issue and VNC reported desktop not available. TLDR: Replaced rpi3b with newer rpi4 w/ bullseye and reinstall servers (primary pi-hole + openvpn).
